The Story of this Project...

Upon initial investigation, Kulaa community was not a good place to drill a borehole as it does not have an ample source of ground water that runs beneath. As an alternative, Create Change decided to construct a 30,000 L tank, which at least provides safe drinking water for community members. Access to clean water has proved to be especially essential for children, the elderly, pregnant women and sick people, who often cannot properly battle the water borne diseases contracted through unsafe drinking water.

Prior to the tank’s construction, the community’s only access to water was a contaminated dam over 1 km from the village which would dry up towards the end of the dry season. Water borne diseases such as guinea worm as well as water borne diseases such as diarrhea were prevalent in the community. Create Change hopes to see a dramatic change in this with the introduction of the 30,000 L Rain Water Harvesting Tank.

“Before we had the tank we had to go a long way to search for water but now there is water right here in our community .” –Abiba

The construction phase of the tank took a little over 3 weeks to complete, with a team of 5 labourers. As the tank was completed during the dry season, Create Change organized a water tankard to fill the new tank so the community would have immediate access to clean water while waiting for the rainy season to begin. The rains have since begun and the tank is regularly filling with clean, safe rain water.

Even when water is scarce during the dry season, the community now has a reliable source of drinking water that eases the burden of water fetching in the community. Any woman living in Kulaa will tell you, there is no worse nightmare than having thirsty children at home, with the closes source of water being 5 km away.

“So because of what you've done for us our arms are always open to you” -Issahaku- Kulaa Elder

Thanks to the generosity of people who stood up to create change, Kulaa community can now proudly say that they have clean safe water, located right in their community.
