The Story of this Project...

It is both sad and amazing that the future of a girl in Northern Ghana completely depends on whether she has access to a few hundred dollars a year. Think, four coffees a month.

I need 200 cedis to pay my school fees this year. If it weren’t for you, where would I get that money?’- Sherifa, Sponsored Girl

“We do not want to live the life that our mothers live. We don’t want a life where it is hard to get food to feed your family’- Fatimata, Sponsored girl

As the literacy rate of women under 25 in Ghana’s Northern Region is 25%, it is quite an accomplishment for a girl to finish secondary school. Most drop out because of the financial strain her education has on their family. Families in Northern Ghana are primarily subsistence farmers, and make as little as $400 a year. Parents often must make the choice between financing a child’s secondary education and having enough food to properly nourish their family.

Women are traditionally viewed as responsible for domestic chores, including fetching water, which is extremely laborious and time consuming. As most families can only afford to send one or two children through secondary school, most will choose a son and keep their daughters at home to perform chores for the family.

Girls under this sponsorship project not only receive funding for school fees, but also necessary supplies such as text books and food provisions, that ensure her ability to succeed in her studies.

This year Create Change aims to sponsor 150 girls in secondary school in Northern Ghana as well as purchasing a complete set of text books which can be loaned to each girl for the duration of the school year.
