The Story of this Project...

The Maynooth Group has generously made a comeback, and are raising money in order to build a rain water harvesting tank at Damankuyili Primary School.

The major problem the school is experiencing is that children are constantly leaving school in order to go find water to drink. Many children take a long time to travel home to get a drink, and do not come back to class. Teachers find it difficult to monitor their students, but feel they have no choice but to let them go as small children cannot sit without water in 40 degree heat.

In order to deal with the problem, the best that teachers can do is to send older students to fetch buckets of dirty dam water in the morning, so they have a small bucket so students can drink in the early morning. This dirty water however affects the students' health, as it is riddled with water-borne diseases that often make them so sick that they don't come to school.

If students had access to clean potable water during their days at school, their class time would not be interrupted. With a stark difference between rural and urban areas, in terms of how far children are able to move forward in their education, it is undeniable that access to water plays a big part.

"Having to go look for water everyday during classtime is definitely affecting the learning process in our classrooms" - Mariama, Teacher

"If we had access to clean water at the school, it would ensure I could finish my lesson plans with the children, instead of class being interrupted so much."- Zeinab, Teacher

Join the Maynooth Group and affect thousands of students who will attend Damankuyili Primary for years to come.
