The Story of this Project...
McKechnie Elementary has taken on a challenge: to help a school in Africa that is in serious need. The Vancouver-based primary school plans to raise funds through a walkathon they are having this May.
Students from McKechnie's humanitarian club have been meeting with Create Change's Shannen O'Brian in order to develop together a project that will help a school that is struggling to educate its students.
McKechnie students efforts will go towards assisting Tichele Primary School. The school is located in a remote corner of the Tamale Metropolis, far from the main road. Tichele Primary School has 215 students, ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 6. There are many problems that Tichele faces.
One main problem that the primary school faces is drinking water - the children, as with the village of Tichele, have to fetch water from a dam when they want to drink. When they become thirsty during the school day, the trip to the dam and back to school results in a lot of missed class.
The school structure is also a major problem. There are 3 classroom blocks, and 6 classes, resulting in overcrowding in the classrooms. This means that students have to sit 3 to a desk built for 2, and many students have to sit or lie on the floor. The desks themselves are a major issue. They're not very sturdy, and with the overcrowding, they break easily, leading to a large pile-up of broken desks which sit at the back of the classroom.
Both the teachers and the students at Tichele Primary are serious about education, but they lack sufficient materials, and the training to fully utilize good teaching and learning materials.
McKechnie Elementary hopes to transform Tichele by developing a project that will help with some of the school's basic needs. Join McKechnie students on their quest to make a difference for a school in serious need.
