WHY THIS PROGRAM?

The last census that was done in Ghana showed that in Ghana's northern region, less than 1% of women had post secondary education compared to 4% of men.   It is no wonder that so few women find themselves in professional positions where they have the opportunity to make a big impact in the world around them.  University degrees are essential in helping women to achieve their potential.  Not only does it empower them in their own careers, but also creates an opportunity to have women in decision making positions, an important step in achieving gender equality.

PROGRAM BENEFITS

1. Financial independence
As girls can pursue careers, they become financially self-sufficient.

2. Females leaders
Women become better represented in a number of different fields.

3. More children in school
Working mothers tend to ensure their children have a quality education.

4. Whole families supported
Women with careers usually support their parents and extended family.

5. Impact on poverty
Women who come from poverty have a vested interest in solving it.

6. Role models for girls
Girls who see women with careers see themselves as capable of more.

PROGRAM COSTS

UNIVERSITY TUITION FOR ONE GIRL = $500 PER YEAR / $41.66 PER MONTH

For just $500 per year or just over $40 per month, a girl achieve her dreams with a scholarship to afford her university tuition for one year.

PROGRAM GOALS

The goal of our University Scholarship program is to assist girls from our high school sponsorship program who have been able to achieve a high standard academically, and have the potential to continue with their education to become a leader in their field.  Our university support extends principally to degrees that will empower girls to make a difference in their communities such as health, education, and community development related degrees.  We also support girls who have struggled somewhat academically but who have clearly demonstrated their commitment to eradicating poverty through Create Change's volunteer and intern opportunities.  The overall goal is to create female leaders in industries that have the potential to impact people living in extreme poverty.
