WHY GIRLS ARE OUR SECRET WEAPON

We have a secret, and it's women in leadership.

GENDER INEQUALITY IS SERIOUS

We live in a world in which women, especially those living in poverty, face gross inequality and injustice throughout their lives, starting at birth.  Women and girls are hardest hit by the effects of extreme poverty, and are at the same time excluded from most opportunities to lead positions that fight to address it.  Read some examples below of how serious gender inequality continues to be.

70% OF PEOPLE LIVING IN
POVERTY ARE WOMEN

Women make up half the world’s population but represent a staggering 70 per cent of the world’s poor.
The Global Poverty Project 2014

496 MILLION WOMEN
WORLDWIDE ARE ILLITERATE

Nearly 17% of the world’s adult population is still not literate; two thirds are women, making gender equality even harder to achieve.
UN World's Women 2015

WOMEN ONLY MAKE UP 22% OF NATIONAL PARLIAMENTS

Women are not well represented politically, holding 21.9% of national parliament positions worldwide.
World Economic Forum 2014

THERE ARE 15 MILLION NEW
CHILD BRIDES EACH YEAR

One third of girls in the developing world are married before the age of 18
and one in nine girls are married before they reach 15 years of age.
ICR Women 2016

WOMEN WORK MORE AND
ARE PAID LESS WORLDWIDE

Women earn half of the income men earn over a lifetime and do nearly 2.5x more unpaid and domestic work.
UN Women 2015

830 WOMEN DIE DAILY FROM PREGNANCY AND CHILDBIRTH

In developing countries, most maternal deaths are preventable, and are the leading cause of death among adolescent girls.

EMPOWERED GIRLS CHANGE EVERYTHING

As women and girls are more likely to be affected by extreme poverty, they are the key to solving the challenges that create the circumstance .  The proven social return of investing in women and girls demonstrates the need to prioritize gender equality.  When girls and women, especially those who have experienced poverty directly, are empowered and provided with the opportunity to lead, extreme poverty becomes a thing of the past.
