YOUTH PROGRAM FAQs
What do I need to participate in an online class?
To participate in our online classes, you will need access to a device (laptop, tablet or smartphone) with a working microphone and camera, as well as a stable internet connection. Students will need a notebook or binder to organize their class work and team initiatives.
What if I miss a class?
All online classes are recorded and put online for students to access them at a different date. Students who miss a class will be required to watch the missed class and fill out a missed class form. Students who miss more than 25% of classes may be asked to leave the program.
Why am I expected to fundraise as part of this program?
Create Change Foundation offers this program to local youth as part of its sustainability model. The organization views its Canadian youth programs as a more effective way of fundraising for its programs overseas as it provides a reliable income for Create Change’s work in Ghana, while at the same time it serves youth in Canada to grow and become leaders. We feel our marketing and fundraising dollars are better spent on empowering local youth to rise to make a difference. Create Change is pleased to offer its youth programs pro-bono in exchange for students’ fundraising efforts.
Who are the other participants in the online class? Do we work together?
Students enrolled in this program are youth ages 16 -21 from all across Canada. Each online class, there will be a period of time for students to mentor each other and to work on practice drills. The program offers a great opportunity to meet like-minded students from all over the country who provide support to each other to ensure everyone reaches their goals.
Am I expected to fundraise to fulfill term requirements on my own, or do I work with other students?
Each student accepted into the program is expected to build a team of at least five of their peers (including participant), which act as the executive team. The program will provide step-by-step instructions on how to build a team. Participants work with their teams to implement fundraising initiatives they design and plan out together.
Do I have to sign up for Term 2 and 3 right away?
No. You can sign up for Term 1, and decide later if you want to commit to Term 2 and 3.
The deadline for Term 2 registration is November 6th, 2019.
The deadline for Term 3 registration is February 26th, 2020.
Students will be reminded of these deadlines during the program.
What happens if I don’t meet the term’s fundraising objectives?
Students have 3 months to complete their fundraising objectives once the term ends, otherwise they will not receive their course certificate or volunteer hours. To proceed to the next term of the program, students must have fundraised at least 75% of the Term’s goal.
How many students do I need to recruit to join my team?
The size of your team is completely up to you. Create Change recommends starting by building a team of five executives. You and another four people can work together to form a larger team depending on your goal and chosen fundraising strategies. Some teams may stick to just five people, others may grow their teams to over 25 members.
Can my team members attend the weekly online classes?
Unfortunately, online classes are only for students who have been formally accepted into the program. Participating students can however show the class recording to fellow team members at any time to help them to familiarize with concepts.
How do I hand-in funds my team and I have raised to Create Change Foundation?
Students can get funds donated online through Create Change’s website, in which case the funds go straight to Create Change. For cash, students can transfer funds at the bank into a money order and mail it via regular post to Create Change. Donations given in the form of cheques can also be mailed to Create Change. Handing over of funds will be reviewed in-class.
Does Create Change issue tax receipts for donations?
Create Change offers tax receipts for Canadian donations of $20 or more. Funds raised through the sale of goods are not eligible for tax receipts. Tax receipts are sent either via e-mail or regular mail, depending on the donation form.
If I want to complete the Social Change Diploma, am I required to travel to Ghana?
Travel to Ghana as part of the program is optional and not required to complete a Social Change diploma.
For the portions of the volunteer trip that are not included, can I fundraise for them?
As flights to Ghana, insurance, vaccines and Visas are not included, students are welcome to use the skills they have acquired to fundraise for the additional expenses. Students must notify Create Change in writing if they plan to fundraise for their trip expenses.
