BEADED JEWELRY

Many tribes in Ghana have a long tradition of beads, and beads still play important roles in Ghanaian society, be it in rituals of birth, coming of age, marriage, or death.  Glass beads made from powdered glass from recycled bottles are made by the Krobo people in Ghana's Volta region.  In Ghana's East, Tabular bronze beads are an important tradition to the Ashanti people, who use a lost wax cast method, making each brass bead unique as the mold is destroyed to extract the bead.

HAND WOVEN & DYED TEXTILES

West African textiles are famous for their stunning designs, and are traditionally naturally dyed and printed.  Mud cloth or 'Bambara' cloth from Mali has its print created with hand drawings using sticks or with stamp using mud, and then left to dye in the sun.  Indigo cloth comes from Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Mali, where the dark blue color is derived from the dye of the indigo plant using its pinnate leaves and clusters of red or purple flowers.
